The Coaching Staff:

 Coach Brandon Baker  is beginning his seventh year as head coach and mimth year as a member of the East Carter basketball coaching staff.  Coach Baker spent the 1999-2000 season as a volunteer scouting consultant and the 2000-2002 seasons as a varsity assistant beside his father, Charles Baker.  Prior to coming to East Carter, he was an assistant coach at Paul Blazer High School in Ashland for four seasons (1995-1999) and also at Lawrence County High School in Louisa for two seasons (1993-1995).  Coach Baker is an 1988 graduate of East Carter and a 1993 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, where he received a basketball scholarship.  Brandon is the son of Charles and Martha Ellen Baker and the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Wilburn and the late Mr. and Mrs. William Baker.  He has one sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Joe Sargent, and two nephews Jodon Charles (8 years) and David Breck Sargent (4 years).


Coach Jack Calhoun is beginning his fourteenth season as an Assistant Coach for the Raiders.  He has been coach of the Junior Varsity for eight years and the Freshmen and Eighth Grade teams for one year.  he is currently in his seventh season as a varsity assistant.  Coach Calhoun is a 1988 graduate of East Carter and a 1993 graduate of Alice Lloyd College, which he attended on a baseball scholarship.  While at Alice Lloyd, he was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1990 and Most Valuable Player in 1991 and 1992.  Jack is a graduate of the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice and is currently employed by the Boyd County Juvenile Detention Center.  Jack is the son of Jack and Levona Calhoun of Grayson.


Coach Tom Bender is beginning his thirteenth season as a member of the Raidersí coaching staff.  He has coached the Freshmen basketball team, the Junior Varsity basketball team, and is currently a varsity assistant coach.  Coach Bender also coached on the college level a number of years prior to joining the East Carter coaching staff.  Coach Bender is married to Jennie, Director of Financial Aid at Kentucky Christian University.  They have two children:  Donald, a 1996 graduate of East Carter; and Becca, a 1999 graduate of East Carter.  They also have two grandchildren, Kaity (9 years) and Jakob (5 years).


Coach Erik Kouns is entering his Eleventh season as an Assistant Coach for the East Carter Basketball Program.  He is a 1998 graduate of East Carter and a 2001 graduate of Morehead State University where he received a degree in mathematics and a minor in coaching.  Erik has also graduated from the Kentucky State Police Academy in October of 2003 in which he was class Valedictorian.  As an East Carter player, Erik set all-time records in points, rebounds, and field goal percentage.  In 1998, he was All District, All-Region, All-EKC, All-Area, and Raider of the Year.  Erik is the son of Perry and Donna Kouns and has one brother, Adam.  Erik is married to the former Ashley Kitchen and is currently employed by the Kentucky State Police.

Coach Luther Jarvis  is entering his Fourth year as Head Freshmen Coach as well as being a Junior Varsity and Varsity Assistant.  He previously coached five years at East Carter Middle School as the seventh and eighth grade  coach and two years at West Carter High School as Junior Varsity Head Coach and Varsity Assistant.  Coach Jarvis is a 1988 graduate of East Carter High School and a 1994 graduate of Kentucky Christian University.  He is currently in his thirteenth year of teaching in Carter County Schools.  Coach Jarvis is married to Bridgett Waggoner and they have two sons, Gunnar (11 years) an Maverick (10 years).

Coach Greg Cherry  is beginning his third year as an assistant coach for the Raiders.  Coach Cherry is a 2003 graduate of East Carter High School.  As a player for the Raiders, Greg played a very instrumental role in leading the Raiders to the 62nd District Championship in Coach Brandon Bakerís first season as head coach.  Greg was the starting point guard and was named 2003 Raider of the Year, along with being named to the All-62nd District Team, the All-EKC Team, and the All-Area Team.  Greg is the son of Jim and Joan Cherry and also a brother of two former East Carter Raider players, Bradley( 2000) and John (2006).  Coach Cherry is currently attending Morehead State University.
