Carter County Scholarships

John T. and Ada M. Diederich Educational Trust: Diederich Scholarship

Eligibility: You must have been a resident of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, Lawrence, or Martin County for the past 3 years; have a GPA between 2.25 to 3.55 unweighted; have an ACT score of at least 17, and three Recommendations sent directly to Dr. Dowd.  Last year students got $12,000!  The number of scholarships awarded varies.  Deadline: Return all forms to Dr. Dowd in the Counseling office by 3 February 2012.

The Sharon Harmon Memorial Teaching Scholarship

This local scholarship provides a one-time grant of $500 for someone planning to become a teacher.  Requires:  ACT, Essay, 2 recommendations.  Deadline:  15 March 2010.  Come to the Counseling office for an Application.

Grayson RECC Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a graduating high school senior; be the child of a member of Grayson RECC whose primary residence is in Carter, Elliott, Greenup, Lawrence, Lewis, or Rowan County; submit an application, transcript, ACT, and essay; and fulfill the requirements of the scholarship program.

Award: $1,000

Carter County Extension Homemakers Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a member at least 1 full-year of Carter County Extension Homemakers and plan to enroll or return to college, university, or vocational-technical school. Based on financial need, scholastic ability, and recommendations.

Justice Scholarship

Oren and Patty Justice Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to students in both public and private high schools in the FIVCO counties (Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence). Students must attend the University of Kentucky, Ashland Community College, Marshall University, Morehead State University, Ohio University (Southern or Athens Branch), Rio Grande University, or Shawnee State University. Based on merit and financial need relative to tuition costs. Preference given to students studying the sciences. Education majors will not be considered.

Requires:  Application, transcript with ACT, financial aid form, essay, two references

Commercial Bank of Grayson Scholarship

Award: $1,000 each semester for 4 years

Requires: Must be an East Carter High School graduating senior, GPA > 3.5, ACT > 20, good attendance, list of activities, essay,  3 references, photo, and interview.

The Northeast Kentucky Area Development Council is offering four $1,000 Scholarships.  Requires:  GPA > 2.5, Low Income, Application, 3 Recommendations, and 2 Essays.  For more information and an application come to the Counseling office.  Deadline:  31 March 2012

Kentucky Head Start Association Memorial Scholarship offers $500 Scholarships.  Requires:  Student must have been in Head Start, 3 References, Application, Statement of Need, and Essay.  Applications are available from the Counseling office.  Deadline:  24 February.

The Hamilton Memorial Scholarship  -  Eligibility:  Must be a graduating Senior, GPA > 3.25, ACT > 20, Attendance > 90%, Extracurricular activities, Volunteer service, Financial need, Application, and Essay.  Award:  a one-time $1,000 scholarship.  Deadline:  1 May.  Contact:  For Applications see Dr. Dowd in the Counseling office.

Marvin Hicks Memorial Vocational Scholarship

You must be a graduating ECHS Senior that is planning a Technical/Vocational career.  This one time $250 scholarship requires:  Application and Essay. Deadline: 1 May.  For Applications see Dr. Dowd in the Counseling office.

The Deanna McDavid Memorial Teacher's Scholarship

You must be a graduating ECHS Senior that is planning a Teaching career.  This one time $500 scholarship requires:  Application, Extracurricular and Community Activities and Essay.  Deadline: 1 May.  For Applications see Dr. Dowd in the Counseling office.

Grayson Rotary Club Scholarship

You must be a graduating Senior at East Carter High School, GPA > 2.50, ACT > 18, Attendance > 95%, Extracurricular activities, Application, and Essay.  This scholarship awards $250 per semester for two semesters.  The deadline is: 13 April.  For applications see the ECHS Counseling office.

Leon Tackett Memorial Scholarship

This $500 scholarship requires: GPA of 2.0, financial need, and not be related to anyone affiliated with People Helping People, Inc.   Application, essay, and two letters of recommendation.  Deadline:  People Helping People by 30 April 2012.

King’s Daughters Health Foundation: Health Care Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a high school senior; be a resident of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, or Lawrence County, Kentucky, or Lawrence County, Ohio, at the time of application and award; be enrolled or plan to enroll in a health care career field at a college, university, or vocational-technical school in Kentucky, Ohio, or West Virginia; and have (1) maintained a 2.5 high school GPA OR successfully completed the GED, AND (2) scored at least a 15 on the ACT OR scored 700 or better on the SAT. Based on financial need.

Requires:  3 recommendations, application, essay and interview.

Award: $2,500

Carter County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship

Students graduating from East or West Carter High School who are interested in a career as a teacher may apply for a one-time $500 scholarship.  Requires:  Application and Essay.  See Dr. Dowd in the Counseling office for applications.  Deadline:  return competed applications and essays to Dr. Dowd in the Counseling office by Friday, 4 May 2012.

Old Time Machinery & Antique Association Scholarship

To be eligible for this $500 scholarship the student must be an East Carter High School or West Carter High School graduating senior, and submit an application, an essay, and two school references.  You must mail your application materials to OTMAA by 15 April 2012.

FCCLA/Red Cross Scholarship

One-time grant of $500.  Requires:  Be an FCCLA member, donate blood or work at the blood drive, and application.  For more information and an application, see Mrs Burton at ECHS.  Deadline:  1 May 2008.

The Carter County Conservation District Scholarship

This scholarship provides $500 per year for up to four years.  Eligibility:  GPA > 2.0, Major in a conservation-related field at a Kentucky college.  Requires:  Application, Essay, three Recommendations, and Transcripts.  Deadline:  15 May, 2008.  Come to the Counseling office for an application.

Students must be a current member of the National Wild Turkey Federation Xtreme JAKES program,  Students must support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports.  GPA = 3.0

Adam Johnson Memorial Scholarship

The applicant must have dropped out of school and returned OR gotten a GED OR has faced a hardship that would qualify you for this Second Chance Scholarship.  Award:  $750.  Qualifications:  GPA > 2.25, take 10+ hrs at college.  Requires:  Application, transcript, copy of diploma/GED, essay, and 2 recommendations.  Deadline:  1 May 2009 (firm).  Applications in the Counseling office.  For more information call:  Teddy Johnson at 304-522-8223 or 304-634-5065.

Bausch Family Scholarship

Kaye Wallace Memorial Scholarship

This one time $500 scholarship requires:  both parents/guardians must be registered Democrats, GPA > 3.0, attend KY college in Fall, extra-curriculars, application, transcript and essay.  Deadline:  27 April in the Counselor's office.

Carter County Bar Association Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be an East Carter High School or West Carter High School graduating senior and submit an essay on “Law Day.”

Award: $50, $125, $175

The Doug Anglin Memorial Art Scholarship ($500+) will be awarded to an ECHS student who plans to pursue an art-related career.  Application form with two short essays available in the Counseling Office, and due by May 1st.

Tuition is guaranteed to full-time students residing in Alice Lloyd College’s 108-county Central Appalachian service area (Carter County!).  Students attending Alice Lloyd College do not need thousands of dollars for a college education – all they need is a desire for learning and self-improvement.  All full-time students work from ten to twenty hours each week in a variety of work areas as a condition for graduation.  THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A GOOD STUDENT WITH REAL FINANCIAL PROBLEMS!
